imagine

Tomorrow, October 9th,  is what would have been the 70th birthday of John Lennon, one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time.  The song "Imagine" reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 here in the U.S.  As Wikipedia reports, Yoko Ono, John's wife, indicated that the lyrical content of "Imagine" was "just what John believed — that we are all one country, one world, one people. He wanted to get that idea out."

Sadly at the age of 40, on December 8, 1980, John was murdered by Mark David Chapman, a man who Lennon had signed a copy of his comeback album "Double Fantasy" for earlier that evening.  "Double Fantasy" had only been released three weeks earlier.  I was 11 years old at the time and vaguely remember hearing about it on the news.

If we all would just 'imagine' all the world as one.

Imagine (click to watch it on YouTube)

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Happy 70th birthday to a dreamer.
